There was heightened tension on Wednesday morning as the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), accompanied by senior military officers including A.M. Yaremi, visited the controversial properties reportedly belonging to a former Chief of Naval Staff.
The visit, which drew attention from both residents and insiders within the military, comes amid ongoing reports that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has moved to seize the land and buildings over what is said to be a disputed inheritance matter.
Sources say the properties in question, located in a highbrow area of Abuja, have been at the center of a silent feud between the FCT Administration and the family of the former naval chief. Wike, according to reports, insists that the land was irregularly acquired and falls under government possession, while the affected family maintains that all legal processes were duly followed.
The Chief of Naval Staff’s visit signal the Navy’s growing interest in the controversy, especially as the matter appears to be taking a political and institutional dimension. Officers seen during the inspection maintained a calm but firm disposition, with security heightened around the area during the brief exercise.
Neither the Navy nor the FCT Administration has released an official statement on the matter, but many Nigerians are already weighing in online, with some describing Wike’s latest move as another show of power, while others argue that no one, no matter how highly placed, should hold onto government land.
