The Super Eagles of Nigeria have again found themselves in the middle of controversy after players and technical staff reportedly refused to attend Tuesday’s training session.

Their action comes just two days before the all-important 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff clash against Gabon.

Sources revealed that the protest was sparked by long-standing unpaid bonuses owed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). The players are said to have grown tired of repeated promises and decided to take a firm stand until the issue is resolved.

Reports indicate that the players are demanding $30,000 in total bonuses for the two upcoming matches — $15,000 for each game. However, the NFF allegedly offered $10,000 per match instead, insisting that the financial situation of the federation could not meet the players’ request.

It was also gathered that the team’s head coach, Eric Chelle, has not been paid his salary for two months. Officials hinted that the coach would have lost his job had the team failed to qualify for the playoffs after defeating Benin Republic 4–0 in their final group game.

A statement said to have been released by the team confirmed the boycott. It read:

“The full squad, including officials, boycotted training today in Morocco because of the unresolved issues with outstanding payments. The Super Eagles are awaiting a quick resolution to continue the preparation for Thursday’s game with Gabon.”

The protest has caused a wave of reactions from Nigerians online, with opinions sharply divided over whether the players’ action was justified.
