Scores of commuters have resorted to trekking on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as a bus which caught fire on the Long Bridge section of the road caused a gridlock.
Our correspondent gathered that the bus caught fire around 9:50am and vehicles traveling to Lagos were forced to stop some meters to the spot where the burning bus is.
Some of the commuters who spoke to our correspondent said this caused a gridlock as vehicles were stopped by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps and policemen.
Some of the commuters were said to have started crossing to the other lane to board commercial motorcyclists who are riding against the traffic.
The okada riders were said to have hiked the fare as some of the stranded commuters were in a hurry to get to their destinations.
One of the stranded commuters who identified himself as Kabir Oyewale, told our correspondent that the gridlock had extended back to Magboro while the outward Lagos lane is relatively free.
He said, ” I am stuck in the traffic and I don’t know when the road will be cleared. A bus caught fire and we were stopped from passing. The gridlock which the fire incident has caused is very terrible.
”The fire has engulfed the bus and nothing can be salvaged from it. The whole vehicle is burning including the tyres.”
