Some #EndSARS protesters have been spotted in a viral video chanting ‘shame’ as Governor Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State tried addressing them.
This is coming amid reports of security operatives shooting peaceful protesters in some parts of Lagos state during the protest aimed at stopping police brutality.
Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ealier appealed to residents of the state to stop the #EndSARS protests.
The protest which has gone peaceful since they started last week, turned violent in Surulere yesterday October 12. A driver and a police inspector were killed in the clash between the protesters and the police.
In a post shared on his Twitter handle, the governor said he is making the appeal as a father,
”I want to appeal to the protesters to take a break from protesting tomorrow. Tempers are at a highest on all sides at this time and while we work to prevent escalation, the safety of our residents is paramount. I speak not just as a governor, but as a father, brother and son.” the governor tweeted.
The governor added that he will be meeting with President Buhari in Abuja over the EndSARS agitation.
The governor also mentioned that he will be meeting with the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, for the release of the protesters that were arrested today.
”I am meeting with the Lagos CP. Protesters will be released and broader issues will be addressed in my meeting with the President tomorrow. Let us take a break from protests tomorrow and give us a chance to take tangible next steps.
The protesters will be released tonight. Their rights will not be violated. That, I assure you.”
Meanwhile, the Lagos state government has dismissed claims that one of the EndSARS protesters was killed by police in Surulere on Monday, October 12.
According to a statement released by the Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho, the man who was killed yesterday was a bystander who wasn’t among the protesters.
Omotosho said the man was killed by hoodlums who stormed the Anti-Kidnapping Unit at Hogan Bassey Street, Surulere, to free two suspects standing trial for alleged kidnapping. The hoodlums reportedly killed one policeman and injured two other officers.
The attention of the Lagos State Government has been drawn to reports that an #ENDSARS protester has been killed in Surulere. This is not true.
A group of hoodlums stormed the Anti-Kidnapping Unit at Hogan Bassey Street, Surulere, to free two suspects standing trial for alleged kidnapping.
They shot three officers. One of them, Inspector Erinfolami Ayodeji, unfortunately, died. The others are Inspectors Ekein Joshua and Peter Agabi.
The hoodlums, while escaping, fired into the air. A bystander was hit. He also died – sadly.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu commiserates with the families, who lost their loved ones and prays that God will strengthen them.
He urges all those concerned to ensure that these protests do not degenerate further and create room for hoodlums who do not mean well for our society.
The government is working with the Police to ensure the restoration of the peace that Lagos has always been proud of.
