Cross River State Police Command has confirmed that only three suspected armed robbers escaped from its cell in Diamond hills and not nineteen being reported in some sections of the media.

Police Public Relations Officer in Cross River State,Irene Ugbo Via telephone interview on Monday Confirmed the incident .

Ugbo who said two of the escapees were unlucky as they were gunned down while trying to attack the police who were on their trail to rearrest them. She said one person has been rearrested and put back into the cell.

The state police spokesperson blamed the congestion of the cell on the Calabar Correctional Service Centre , who she said have refused suspected to be in their custody due to covid-19 pandemic.

She however said the Commissioner of police,Abdukadir Jimoh has ordered investigations into the matter, while all officers on duties will be sanctioned.

The PPRO also assured that the cell will be built with stronger security hardwares in all the police locked up cells in Cross River State.
