Nigeria and Brazil have taken major steps to deepen bilateral relations with the signing of a $1 billion agricultural mechanisation deal, alongside plans to formalise over 30 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering critical sectors.
The development was announced on Tuesday by President Bola Tinubu in a statement following the arrival of Brazil’s Vice President, Geraldo Alckmin, and his wife, Maria Lúcia Alckmin, on a three-day state visit to Nigeria.
During the visit, both countries are expected to seal agreements across a range of key areas including defence and security cooperation, energy transition, agricultural technology transfer, trade facilitation, cultural exchange, and industrial development.
Tinubu described the engagement as a reaffirmation of the deep-rooted ties between Nigeria and Brazil, noting their shared values, historical connections, and mutual ambition for inclusive, citizen-focused development.
“We are exploring actionable pathways to deepen cooperation across key sectors: agribusiness and food security, trade and industrialisation, energy transition, healthcare delivery, innovation, defence, and cultural exchange,” he said.
He highlighted the $1 billion Green Imperative Programme as a cornerstone of the renewed partnership. The initiative, jointly developed by Nigeria’s Ministry of Agriculture and Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is aimed at revolutionising Nigeria’s agricultural sector through technology transfer, capacity building, and the creation of service centres nationwide.
“We also look forward to Nigeria’s active participation at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, as both nations work to scale up collaboration on climate action, energy transition, and environmental resilience,” Tinubu added.
The president said the visit reflects a shift from goodwill to execution, with both nations pursuing real progress in renewable energy, security cooperation, and the creative industries.
“…Nigeria remains firmly committed to building resilient South–South partnerships anchored in mutual respect, shared prosperity, and tangible results for our citizens,” he said.
