Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has been undergoing medical treatment in London since arriving in the United Kingdom in April 2025, multiple family sources have revealed.

What was initially intended to be a routine medical check-up reportedly turned into a full hospital admission after the former president fell ill.

While the specific nature of his illness and the name of the hospital have not been disclosed, his long-time spokesperson, Garba Shehu, has confirmed the development.

“Following your inquiry, I wish to state as follows: It is true that the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, is unwell. He has been receiving treatment in the UK,” Shehu said in response to media questions.

“You would recall he made it known that he was going for his annual medical check-up. He became ill there, but I am happy to announce to you that he is doing well in his recovery while receiving treatment. We pray for his healthy recovery,” he added.

The former military Head of State, who served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, has a well-known history of medical visits abroad—especially to the United Kingdom.

During his presidency, Buhari often travelled to London for health-related reasons, sparking national conversations about the state of healthcare in Nigeria and the frequency of such overseas medical trips by public officials.

As of now, no official timeline has been given for his return to Nigeria. However, close associates remain optimistic about his full recovery.
