The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, after a prolonged illness in London.
The announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following presidential approval. The declaration comes as part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning period proclaimed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo stated that the holiday is intended to allow Nigerians time to reflect on Buhari’s legacy of service, patriotism, and his contributions to democracy and national development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served this nation with sincerity, commitment, and a strong belief in unity and progress,” the minister said. “The public holiday will give citizens an opportunity to reflect on the values he embodied throughout his life.”
He urged Nigerians to honour Buhari’s memory by embracing peace, unity, and patriotism, principles that the late president consistently championed during his time in office.
As part of the national mourning protocol, flags will continue to fly at half-mast until the end of the seven-day observance on Saturday, July 19, 2025.
The Federal Government extended its condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of the late president.
Buhari will be laid to rest on Tuesday in Daura, Katsina State, with burial rites scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
