Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending a long-standing association with the party he helped found.

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, Atiku stated that his decision was prompted by the PDP’s departure from its founding principles and the irreconcilable differences that have since emerged.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter began.

He reflected on his political journey within the PDP, saying:“I would like to take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the opportunities I have been given by the Party. Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life.”

Atiku’s Formal Resignation Letter

Calling the move “heartbreaking,” Atiku added that the party’s current direction is no longer in line with the ideals on which it was founded.

“However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”

He concluded his resignation letter by extending best wishes to the PDP and its leadership while expressing appreciation for the support he received throughout his political career under the party’s banner.

Since the news, all local government and ward chairmen from Atiku’s home LGA—Jada in Adamawa State—have also announced their resignation from the PDP.

Multiple sources indicate that the former vice president is expected to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), raising speculation about his political plans ahead of the 2027 general elections.
