U.S. President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a common circulation disorder that affects blood flow in the legs, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Speaking on Thursday, Leavitt said the 79-year-old noticed “mild swelling in his lower legs,” prompting a series of tests conducted by his medical team.

“This is a common condition, particularly in individuals over the age of 70,” she said.

According to Leavitt, Trump underwent a complete blood count, a comprehensive metabolic panel, and a coagulation profile. The results showed no alarming concerns. “Importantly, there was no evidence of deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease… An echocardiogram was also performed and confirmed normal cardiac structure and function; no signs of heart failure, renal impairment, or systemic illness were identified additionally,” she said, quoting a letter from Trump’s physician.

Trump, who insisted the findings be made public “in the effort of transparency,” continues to maintain that he is in good health.

What is Chronic Venous Insufficiency?

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) occurs when veins in the legs fail to effectively return blood to the heart. This can cause blood to pool in the lower limbs, leading to symptoms such as pain, swelling, cramps, skin discoloration, and—if untreated—ulcers. While uncomfortable, the condition is not considered life-threatening.

Leavitt also addressed viral photos showing discoloration on the back of Trump’s hand, which had raised eyebrows online. She clarified: “This is consistent with minor soft tissue irritation from frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin, which is taken as part of a standard cardiovascular prevention regimen.”

She reassured the press that Trump remains “in excellent health,” and added, “I think all of you witness that on a daily basis here.”

Trump’s Health in the Spotlight

Trump, who became the oldest U.S. president to be inaugurated in January, has long boasted of his vitality. He previously criticized his 2024 election rival, Joe Biden—now 82—for his age and physical stamina.

However, concerns about Trump’s own fitness for office resurfaced after a poor performance in a key presidential debate, which led to his surprise withdrawal from the 2024 race.
