Super Falcons star striker, Asisat Oshoala, has firmly dismissed rumours suggesting she has retired from international football.
Speaking to journalists in Morocco on Saturday after Nigeria’s dramatic 3-2 victory over the host nation in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), the six-time African Player of the Year reaffirmed her dedication to the national team.
“I don’t know where that came from. I get it, but I’m not bothered. I’m still here. I’m still playing. I’m still doing my job. That’s what I’m focused on,” Oshoala said.
Oshoala, widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest female footballers, made her senior debut for the Super Falcons in 2013 during a friendly match against Japan under interim coach Edwin Okon.
She rose to global recognition at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada, where she was named the tournament’s best player and top scorer with seven goals.
Her stellar performances have since earned her a central role in the Super Falcons’ success, including multiple WAFCON titles and World Cup appearances.
Oshoala’s statement puts to rest swirling social media rumours about her possible retirement, as fans speculated on her international future following Nigeria’s latest continental triumph.
With her reaffirmed commitment, the Barcelona Femeni forward looks set to continue leading the line for Nigeria as the Super Falcons prepare for future international competitions.
