The Sokoto State Government has expanded its mass transit fleet with the addition of 30 new buses and officially launched a digital e-ticketing system aimed at transforming the state’s public transportation sector.
At a ceremony held on Sunday in Sokoto, the Deputy Governor, Idris Muhammed Gobir, handed over the new buses to the Commissioner for Transportation, Bala Kokani, on behalf of Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration. With this rollout, the total number of buses procured under the current government now stands at 70.
Gobir revealed that the latest buses had been part of an earlier procurement plan but were held back to allow the completion of the digital ticketing infrastructure. He highlighted the platform as a game-changer that will ease access to transport services across the state.
“With the e-ticketing system now fully operational, passengers can conveniently book and pay for their trips online, removing bottlenecks and long queues at terminals,” said Gobir.
He added that the system will also promote transparency, accountability, and value for money in the operations of the mass transit service. The Deputy Governor urged the Ministry of Transportation to uphold rigorous standards in vehicle maintenance, stressing that the buses are public assets purchased with taxpayers’ money and must be treated as such.
Commissioner Bala Kokani expressed appreciation to Governor Aliyu for his commitment to modernising the transportation system and pledged that the ministry would ensure the vehicles are well maintained and efficiently deployed.
“I want to assure His Excellency that we will treat these vehicles like personal property and maintain them in the best condition,” Kokani stated.
This development is part of Sokoto’s broader plan to modernise infrastructure, promote digital governance, and enhance service delivery across key sectors.
