The Labour Party (LP) has declared its willingness to make Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed the party’s presidential aspirant for the 2027 election, if he signifies interest.

This declaration was made by the party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk, in an interview with Trust Tv on Wednesday.

Umar stated that the party’s presidential ticket is not meant for or reserved for one person alone, but is open to all contenders including Datti Baba-Ahmed, who was Peter Obi’s 2023 running mate.

Datti is qualified to contest for the presidency just like Peter Obi,” Farouk said. “The seat of that candidacy is not reserved for anybody. It is open for a competitive contest.”

“If Datti is willing to aspire for presidency and he wants to do that under the Labour Party, we will open it. Come and buy the form, mobilise support, and contest.”

Commenting on Obi’s latest alliance with members of the opposition, especially the new coalition of the ADC, Farouk expressed his distaste in how Obi has been publicly fraternizing with the opponents warning that he risks losing the support of the Labour party and the ticket if he keeps at it.

“You can’t be romancing other political parties and expect to retain relevance in the Labour Party,” he warned. “From the onset, that may be a basis for disqualification.”

It is known that Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed may be interested in contesting for presidency come 2027, if Peter Obi is not interested in running under the LP. However, he remains supportive of Obi.
