Fresh reports suggest that former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan is gearing up to contest the 2027 presidential election, with political permutations aligning around the possibility of a single-term presidency if he emerges victorious.
According to Vanguard, long-standing speculation about Jonathan’s potential return to Aso Rock appears to be gaining momentum, particularly within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). While initial talks were dismissed due to doubts over his willingness to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, recent developments indicate otherwise.
A close ally of the former president reportedly confirmed Jonathan’s readiness to re-enter the race, citing the Bayelsa-born politician’s growing consultations with political heavyweights across the country.
Sources disclosed that Jonathan recently held a private meeting with former military president General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.) at his Hilltop Mansion in Minna, Niger State — a move interpreted as part of wider consultations to consolidate northern support.
He is said to be considering a PDP ticket, backed by a strategy that could allow him to secure a strong South-South and South-West coalition, bolstered by northern alliances.
According to the unnamed source, the plan to draft Jonathan into contesting on PDP’s platform had gone far, and he has accepted to run. He is going into the race to find ways of addressing Nigeria’s rising poverty, hardship and the general suffering that had gripped the citizenry since the All Progressives Congress (APC) took over power in 2015.
Confirming the party’s efforts, Mallam Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, said:
“Many Nigerians have come to realise the mistake they made in not re-electing Dr. Jonathan. They now acknowledge his achievements and are even apologising, pleading with him to return and rescue the country.”
Jonathan’s potential comeback is seen by many as a strategic game-changer, particularly given his widespread recognition and statesman status across the African continent. While Jonathan has yet to make an official declaration, these developments strongly signal that his 2027 political ambition may no longer be mere speculation, but a fast-developing reality.
