Popular Nigerian dancer, Kafayat Oluwatoyin Shafau, widely known as Kaffy, has shared the challenges she faced in relationships after becoming a single mother.

Speaking on a recent episode of The Honest Bunch podcast, the 45-year-old mother of two revealed that a man once told her he could never consider dating or marrying her simply because she had children.

“I have had somebody tell me because I’m a single mother he can’t even think of dating me because I have two children,” Kaffy said. “What makes you think that a woman that has been divorced is not even the better candidate if she had worked on herself? What’s the guarantee that two single people today are not going to be divorced people tomorrow?”

Kaffy questioned the negative stereotypes around single parents, stressing that divorce or single parenthood should not automatically disqualify anyone from being a good partner. She argued that individuals who have experienced divorce may have grown and evolved, making them more prepared for healthier relationships.

“Why are people insisting on marrying someone fresh? But both of you are going into the same data that the world has computed for you that over 70 per cent of marriages crash. You are part of the 70 per cent,” she added.

Kaffy married Joseph Ameh, a music director and former drummer for P-Square, in July 2015. Their marriage, which produced two children, ended in divorce in January 2022. She previously explained that the split was due to a desire for individual growth and what she described as a lack of destiny alignment.
