A shocking scene unfolded at the Niger Delta State University (NDU), Bayelsa State, when a male lecturer and a female student engaged in a violent brawl during an examination, sparking outrage across social media.
In a viral video circulating on X (formerly Twitter), the lecturer is seen landing punches and even a headbutt on the female student, who fought back as stunned colleagues recorded the altercation instead of intervening.
Eyewitnesses allege the confrontation began after the lecturer seized the student’s mobile phone on suspicion of exam malpractice. Rather than letting the matter rest, the student reportedly demanded the immediate return of her phone, leading to a heated exchange that spiralled into a physical fight.
The disturbing clip has ignited heated debate online, with Nigerians divided over who bears greater responsibility. Some critics have condemned the lecturer for losing control and resorting to violence, insisting he should face disciplinary action.
Others, however, argue the student displayed gross misconduct and should be expelled for exam malpractice and indiscipline.“The lecturer should have exercised restraint, no matter the provocation,” one X user wrote. Another countered: “That student disgraced herself and the institution. This isn’t how to resolve conflict.”
So far, the university management has yet to issue an official statement, but the incident has placed the institution in the spotlight as calls for accountability mount.
