Ruth Otabor, sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has died.

Her death was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by Eko Solicitors & Advocates on behalf of the Otabor family and shared by Phyna on her Instagram page.

“With a heavy heart, the family regrets to announce the passing on to glory of their daughter, sister, and mother on this 31st day of August, 2025, at about 06:30 hrs,” the statement read.

The family appealed for privacy as they mourn, adding that details of the funeral will be communicated in due course.

Ruth’s death comes just weeks after she was involved in a tragic accident on August 13, 2025, when a Dangote Group truck hit her near Auchi Polytechnic in Edo State, crushing her leg, which was later amputated.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said the truck was eventually stopped by a bystander.

In a statement issued shortly after her passing, the Dangote Group expressed sadness over the loss, noting that the company and its insurance partners had been responsible for all her medical and financial support since the accident.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ruth Otabor, who was injured in the recent road incident involving one of our trucks in Auchi, Edo State,” the company said.

The conglomerate disclosed that plans had already been concluded to fly her to India for advanced treatment pending medical clearance, before her sudden death.

“Since the accident, our officials and insurance partners have been by her side, covering all financial and medical costs and supporting her family. Arrangements had been made for her to be flown to India for advanced treatment, pending medical clearance from her doctors. Sadly, despite these efforts and Ruth’s brave fight to live, we lost her today,” the statement added.

Dangote Group further reaffirmed its commitment to safety and accountability in its operations while condoling with the Otabor family.

“At Dangote Group, safety, accountability, and compassion remain at the core of our operations. We remain committed to strengthening our safety systems and supporting those affected in moments of tragedy. May God grant her mercy and eternal rest,” the statement concluded.
