Nigeria’s green and white flag glittered proudly on the world stage on Monday as Tobi Amusan powered to a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Tokyo 2025 World Championships.

Amusan, the world record holder, clocked 12.29 seconds to claim second place in a dramatic final that saw Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji set a new national record and personal best of 12.24s to take gold. America’s Grace Stark finished third in 12.34s.

The silver medal marks Nigeria’s first podium finish at the championships and signals a comeback for Amusan, who endured heartbreak at the Paris 2024 Olympics where she failed to reach the final. With this achievement, the 27-year-old etched her name into history as Nigeria’s first two-time medallist in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Championships.

The Tokyo performance carried added weight for Nigerian fans who have long waited for their star athlete to return to form. Amusan’s resilience was hailed as a symbol of the nation’s fighting spirit and capacity to rise after setbacks.

Olympic champion Masai Russell narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fourth, while defending champion Danielle Williams of Jamaica ended in fifth place.
