Nigerians may face widespread blackouts in the coming days as the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) on Wednesday commenced an indefinite strike over unmet demands, including the non-implementation of the national minimum wage and the casualisation of workers.

The industrial action was announced in a notice signed by NUEE’s Acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, who said the strike followed the expiration of an ultimatum issued to the management of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

According to the union, the TCN management has failed to address several staff welfare and operational issues such as unpaid salaries, lack of working tools, non-provision of protective equipment, and unresolved matters stemming from the unbundling of the company.

“We cannot continue to fold our arms while we watch our rights being vehemently violated and the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry going down the drain,” the notice read, directing members to withdraw their services nationwide until the management meets their demands.

The latest action comes barely a year after a similar strike by NUEE in June 2024 disrupted electricity supply across the country.
