A former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), has emerged as the new National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) through a consensus arrangement.
The announcement was made late Wednesday night in Abuja by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, who revealed that Turaki’s emergence followed extensive consultations among key Northern PDP stakeholders.
“After broad deliberations and consultations, stakeholders have unanimously agreed to adopt Kabiru Tanimu Turaki as the new National Chairman of our great party,” Fintiri declared around 10:45 p.m.
The decision, party insiders say, is aimed at fostering unity and ensuring a smooth transition in the party’s leadership structure as the PDP intensifies preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Prominent figures who attended the high-level meeting included the incumbent PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum; Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal; Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed; and former Information Minister, Prof. Jerry Gana.
Others present were former Senate President Bukola Saraki, former Kaduna State Governors Ibrahim Shekarau and Ahmed Makarfi, and Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, among several party stalwarts.
Turaki, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former PDP presidential aspirant, is expected to bring both political experience and legal acumen to his new role as he leads efforts to reposition the party nationally.
