The vibrant nightlife of Lagos took a dramatic turn in the early hours of Sunday when operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) raided Proxy Nightclub in Victoria Island, arresting popular socialite Pretty Mike and several others over alleged drug-related offences.
According to the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the midnight operation followed credible intelligence suggesting that illegal drug activities were taking place within the high-profile club owned by Pretty Mike, whose real name is Mike Eze Nwalie Nwogu.
“The operation was based on verified intelligence. Our operatives moved in after hours of surveillance,” Babafemi confirmed in a statement on Sunday.
NDLEA Operation
The raid reportedly occurred around 3 a.m., with over 100 partygoers taken into custody for questioning. NDLEA operatives were said to have arrived at the venue as early as 11 p.m. on Saturday, blending in among revelers before launching the coordinated swoop.
During the operation, officers allegedly recovered various banned substances from both the guests and the club’s storage areas.
“All those arrested have been taken into custody for screening, and anyone found culpable will be prosecuted in line with the law,” Babafemi stated.
While the NDLEA has not yet released the full list of substances recovered or specific charges that may follow, sources within the agency said the raid was part of a broader crackdown on drug-linked nightlife operations across major Nigerian cities.
Public Reaction
The incident has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, where Pretty Mike — known for his flamboyant lifestyle and controversial public appearances — remains a trending topic. Some users have described the raid as “a wake-up call” for Lagos nightlife, while others questioned the timing and tactics of the NDLEA’s operation.
As investigations continue, Pretty Mike and other detained individuals are expected to face further interrogation at the NDLEA’s Lagos Command headquarters.
The agency has pledged to “leave no stone unturned” in ensuring accountability, emphasizing its zero-tolerance stance toward narcotics trafficking and abuse within entertainment circles.
