England captain and Bayern Munich striker, Harry Kane, was on Monday night officially announced as the winner of the coveted 2026 Ballon d’Or award. The landmark ceremony took place at the prestigious London Palladium to mark the award’s 70th anniversary.
The 33-year-old goal machine saw off stiff competition from second-placed Kylian Mbappe of Real Madrid and France, as well as Barcelona and Spain’s Lamine Yamal, who is a three-time winner of the Men’s Young Talent of the Year.
With this sensational victory, Kane emerged as the first English player to win the highest individual honor in world football in 25 years, since Michael Owen claimed it back in 2001.
He now joins an elite club of English legends who have won the prize, including Stanley Matthews in 1956, Bobby Charlton in 1966, and Kevin Keegan in 1978 and 1979, alongside Scottish legend Denis Law in 1964 and Northern Ireland icon George Best in 1968.
The award was presented to Kane by Brazilian football legend Ronaldo Nazário.
While receiving the golden trophy on stage, an emotional Kane expressed his joy to the audience.
“I am almost speechless. Being here in London has made it extra special,” Kane said.
He added, “Thank you to everyone who voted for me. I can imagine it was tough this year.”
“[There are] some world-class players in the room tonight.
Congratulations to all the winners and nominees tonight. [It is] an impressive showing of determination and what hard work can really achieve,” he concluded.
According to reports by BBC Sport late Monday, Kane enjoyed a staggering individual campaign, scoring 61 goals in 51 club matches for Bayern Munich last season.
This incredible feat stands as the highest number of goals a Bayern player has ever scored in a single season.
Including his international outings for England, Kane registered an extraordinary 73 goals and eight assists across 65 total matches.
The report noted that “no player has ever scored so many goals in a season for Bayern, a club that has had legendary goalscorers like Gerd Muller, Rummenigge and more recently Robert Lewandowski in their ranks.”
It added, “Kane’s 12 goals for England last season – including six at the World Cup – take him up to a total of 73.”
“Only one player in history from Europe’s top leagues has scored more in a season: Lionel Messi’s 82 for Barcelona and Argentina in 2011-12.”
Following closely on that historic list are Gerd Muller with 72 in 1972-73, Cristiano Ronaldo with 66 in both 2011-12 and 2014-15, Brazilian legend Ronaldo with 66 in 1996-97, Erling Haaland with 64 in 2022-23, and Luis Suarez with 64 in 2015-16.
The English forward spent over ten years at Tottenham Hotspur after making his senior debut in 2011, before sealing a high-profile transfer to Bayern Munich in 2023.
Since making the move to Germany, he has picked up two Bundesliga titles, two Super Cups, and one DFB Pokal trophy.
His 61 goals in all competitions for Bayern last season were a massive 19 goals clear of any other player in Europe’s top five leagues.
“It was the most anyone has recorded since Cristiano Ronaldo also notched 61 for Real Madrid 11 years ago,” the report highlighted.
In the German domestic league, Kane emerged as top scorer with 36 goals finishing 17 clear of his nearest challenger.
He also bagged 14 goals in the UEFA Champions League and registered 10 goals in the German Cup.
Remarkably, Kane secured the award despite his Bayern Munich side suffering a painful 6-5 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, while England fell 2-1 to Argentina in their World Cup semi-final clash.
Having finished 10th in the 2024 Ballon d’Or rankings, Kane was crowned the top player in the world without lifting either of football’s biggest team trophies last season.
This marks only the fifth time in the past 20 years that the Ballon d’Or has not gone to a winner of the World Cup, Champions League, European Championship, or Copa America.
Kane now enters an exclusive group alongside Lionel Messi, who achieved the feat in 2010, 2012, and 2019, and Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013.
Congratulating the Three Lions captain on his achievement, England manager Thomas Tuchel expressed his deep pride in the striker.
“I ran out of superlatives to describe your performances a long time ago, but I’m delighted to see that you have now been formally recognised by the football world,” Tuchel said.
“To become the first Englishman to win this huge honour in 25 years makes it extra special, and we are lucky to have you as our leader.”
“I know you will enjoy this moment with your loved ones and then get back to doing what you do best – scoring goals and winning football matches,” the manager added.
