Adamu Abubakar, son of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, has resigned from his position as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State.

In a resignation letter dated March 2, 2026, and addressed to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri through the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar did not provide reasons for stepping down.

His resignation comes shortly after Fintiri’s high-profile defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that has reshaped the political landscape in the state.

In a statement released by his personal assistant and media aide, Abdulaziz Jauro, Abubakar expressed gratitude to the governor for the opportunity to serve in what he described as a strategic role. He said the appointment was an honour and pledged continued support for the administration’s development objectives.

The former commissioner also acknowledged the encouragement of his father and commended permanent secretaries, directors, engineers, and ministry staff for their dedication to infrastructure growth across the state.

He further thanked the people of Jada for their support during his tenure, noting that his resignation does not mark the end of his public service. According to the statement, Abubakar said the decision opens new avenues for contributing to Adamawa’s progress and unity.

Fintiri had announced in a statewide broadcast that members of his cabinet and the PDP structure in Adamawa moved with him to the APC. Within 24 hours of that announcement, 22 commissioners and special advisers also declared their defection to the ruling party.
