Bayelsa State has been thrown into mourning after the sudden passing of Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who died on Thursday in Yenagoa.

The deputy governor was said to have collapsed shortly after stepping out of a tense meeting with community leaders and stakeholders involved in pipeline surveillance operations. According to government sources, he exited the conference room at the Deputy Governor’s Office and was on the staircase when he suddenly slumped.

Those present, including aides and senior government officials, immediately rushed him to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Yenagoa. Medical personnel made efforts to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

News of his passing was also acknowledged by Lere Olayinka, media aide to the FCT Minister, who confirmed the incident publicly.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo, who was 60, had served as Deputy Governor since February 2020 and was previously the representative of Bayelsa West in the Senate. The Bayelsa State Government is expected to issue a formal announcement as further details surrounding the incident unfold.
