English Premier League giants, Arsenal, have confirmed that key defender, William Saliba, will be sidelined for an extended period after sustaining a back injury while representing France at the FIFA World Cup.
The 25-year-old center-back had reportedly been managing the issue for several weeks prior to the tournament.
However, the injury worsened during France’s semi-final defeat against Spain, where he was forced off the pitch after playing for just 30 minutes.
The setback also ruled the defender out of France’s third-place play-off match against England.
Speaking on his fitness struggles during the World Cup, Saliba admitted that he had been playing through the pain barrier to support both his club and national team.
“I’ve had some minor niggles for several months,” he said. “I’ve been gritting my teeth because there was the Champions League and the Premier League. The World Cup comes round only once every four years, so you’ve got to grit your teeth.”
Upon his return to London, the defender underwent medical assessment by a specialist.
The club subsequently confirmed that surgery would not be required, and he will instead embark on a managed rehabilitation program.
Saliba played a crucial role for Mikel Arteta’s side last season, recording 50 appearances across all competitions. His contributions helped the Gunners end a 22-year wait for the Premier League title and reach the UEFA Champions League final.
His absence serves as a major setback for the North London outfit as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
The French star is now expected to miss the Community Shield clash against Manchester City on August 16, as well as Arsenal’s Premier League opener against newly promoted Coventry City five days later.
While the club has refrained from giving an exact timeline for his return, they described his expected absence as an “extended period”.
