Dolly Parton, the legendary American country music singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist, has died at the age of 80.
Parton died in Nashville, Tennessee, on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, with her family confirming her death through a statement shared on her social media accounts.
Her nephew, Brian Seaver, announced the news in an emotional video posted to Parton’s Instagram account.
“My name is Brian Seaver, son of Cassie Parton, and I’m representing the Parton and Owens family today announcing the passing of my aunt, Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean, Sister, Sis and Granny to one generation and Gigi to the next,” he said.
The family said Parton had faced a brief battle with cancer before her death. She had also recently spoken publicly about health challenges and cancelled some appearances.
Born into a large and financially struggling family in the mountains of East Tennessee, Parton rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most influential figures in country music and American popular culture.
Her career, which spanned more than six decades, produced some of the most recognisable songs in music history, including “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You.”
Beyond music, Parton established herself as a successful actress, entrepreneur and philanthropist. She starred in films including 9 to 5 and built the Dollywood entertainment empire.
She was also widely celebrated for her philanthropic work, particularly through her Imagination Library, which provides free books to children.
Parton’s death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from fans, fellow entertainers and public figures around the world.
US President Donald Trump also honoured the late singer, announcing that American flags would be flown at half-staff across the country for one week in her memory.
“Very sad to report that Dolly Parton, one of the greatest Country singers, and far beyond, EVER, has just passed away. This is a true loss for millions of people. There has never been anyone like her, and never will be,” Trump wrote.
He added: “Rest in Peace, Dolly! The World loves you.”
Parton leaves behind a remarkable legacy in music, film and philanthropy, with her work continuing to influence generations of artists and fans around the world.
