Former Niger Delta militant leader Asari Dokubo has publicly described himself as an Islamist and a jihadist while speaking about his religious beliefs and identity.
In a viral video circulating on social media, Dokubo said the name he now uses reflects his Islamic faith and personal convictions.
“I’m a jihadist. My name is Mujahed, he who carries out jihad; that is what it means in Arabic,” he said, explaining that the name represents an identity he deliberately adopted.
“That is the name I adopted,” he added.
Dokubo also stressed his commitment to Islam, stating that he practises the religion openly and without fear.
“Listen to me very well, I’m an Islamist. I’m a Muslim without apology and fear,” he said.
The former militant leader, who previously headed the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force during the height of militancy in the oil-rich region, has remained a controversial public figure known for strong political and security-related statements.
Recently, Dokubo also issued a warning to the United States and its military, declaring that Nigeria would become their “graveyard” if any foreign military strike was carried out against the country.
Speaking during a Facebook live broadcast, he warned that American soldiers would face deadly resistance if they attempted to invade Nigeria in response to threats reportedly linked to remarks by Donald Trump.
Dokubo described the United States as “a country filled with insane people,” adding that it was not surprising that such a country could elect Trump as president.
“Let Trump come with his America, they will all die,” he said during the broadcast.
The former warlord also rejected claims that violence in Nigeria targets only Christians, insisting that Muslims are also victims of attacks across the country.
His remarks have sparked debate online, with supporters and critics reacting strongly to his description of himself as a jihadist and his warnings directed at the United States.
