Former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, has died in London, the United Kingdom, after a period of deteriorating health, family and medical sources confirmed on Friday.
Obiano, 69, was said to have been undergoing treatment for severe heart failure and complications linked to urinary cancer before his condition suddenly worsened.
A senior family source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the former governor’s final moments as devastating for his loved ones.
“His health had been declining in recent months, but the final collapse came suddenly. We are shattered,” the source said.
Medical personnel in London also confirmed that Obiano had been in intensive care prior to his death.
“He fought till the very last moment,” a hospital insider disclosed.
Obiano governed Anambra State from March 2014 to March 2022 and was facing a nine-count money laundering charge involving an alleged misappropriation of N4 billion belonging to the state. The matter, being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), had been re-assigned to Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court, Abuja, with trial scheduled to continue on November 25.
