Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, on Sunday, signed three executive orders aimed at tackling political thuggery, illegal mining, and drug abuse in the state.
This disclosure was contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Re-orientation, Zainab Jalingo.
According to the statement, Governor Kefas expressed deep concern over the alarming rise in substance abuse across the state and its direct correlation with criminality, violence, and social disintegration in society.
Warning on the dangerous consequences of substance abuse, Kefas declared, “Drug abuse remains one of the greatest threats to the future of our young people. It fuels insecurity, destroys families, undermines productivity, and exposes communities to various forms of crime.”
He explained that the new order will give security agencies and relevant regulatory bodies stronger legal tools to combat the menace effectively.
“The Executive Order provides stronger legal backing for relevant authorities to prevent, monitor, and prosecute activities related to drug abuse while supporting efforts geared towards public enlightenment, rehabilitation, and youth development,” Kefas said.
On the order prohibiting political thuggery, the governor noted that the decision became imperative due to approaching political campaigns and the burning need to preserve the prevailing peace currently being enjoyed across the state.
He recalled the strenuous efforts made by his administration to restore peace and security, stressing that his government would not tolerate anyone attempting to disrupt public order or undermine the stability of the state.
Detailing the restrictions, the governor emphasized that “The Executive Order prohibits the recruitment, sponsorship, financing, harbouring, or use of political thugs by any individual, group, or political interest.”
He added that “It is intended to discourage violence, intimidation, destruction of property, and other unlawful acts often associated with electoral contests.”
Addressing the economic and environmental threats in the state, Kefas expressed grave concern over the increasing activities of illegal miners, loggers, and other unauthorized operators.
He noted that their illegal operations have continuously resulted in environmental degradation, destruction of farmland and water sources, as well as severe threats to the safety and livelihoods of residents.
Highlighting the scope of the environmental order, Kefas stated, “This Executive Order strengthens measures against the illegal exploitation of natural resources, promotes environmental sustainability, and protects the rights and welfare of communities hosting legitimate resource development activities.”
Calling for a unified front to ensure total compliance and implementation of the directives, the governor appealed to all key community figures and organizations to support the government’s drive.
“The government calls on all citizens, traditional institutions, religious leaders, youth groups, political stakeholders and civil society organisations to support the implementation of these Executive Orders in the collective interest of peace, security, and progress,” he stated.
