A convoy belonging to former Anambra State governor, Dr. Chris Ngige, came under attack on the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area on Monday, leaving one woman dead and several others injured.
Ngige was not in the convoy at the time of the attack.
According to eyewitness accounts, the unidentified assailants—dressed in what appeared to be police and military uniforms—opened fire on the pilot vehicle. A police officer in the lead car was shot, and his rifle and uniform were taken away by the attackers. The pilot car was riddled with bullets.
Tragically, a woman who attempted to record the shooting on her phone was fatally hit. A shop owner who rushed out to see what was happening was also shot. He lost significant blood but is expected to undergo surgery soon to remove the bullets and make a full recovery.
No police officer was confirmed dead in the attack. The escort leader who sustained gunshot injuries has already undergone surgery and is expected to recover fully. The shop owner, according to sources, was fortunate as none of the bullets lodged in his spine.
Speaking shortly after the incident, Dr. Ngige confirmed the attack and expressed deep sadness over the loss of the woman who was killed. He also assured that he would support the medical treatment of those injured.
As of the time of this report, the Anambra State Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the attack.
