The political landscape in Kano State witnessed a major realignment on Monday as the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (Congress (NDC), Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, officially picked Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate ahead of the highly anticipated 2027 general elections.
Mustapha is the son of the high-profile National Leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Political analysts believe this calculated move is bound to fundamentally reshape political alliances and dynamics within the state’s tight governorship race.
Confirming the development to journalists, the spokesperson for the NDC governorship candidate, Ibrahim Shuaibu, noted that the decision was reached after extensive and strategic consultations with key party leaders and stakeholders across the state.
According to Shuaibu, the choice of the younger Kwankwaso is a strategic masterstroke aimed at solidifying the party’s structures and maximizing its chances at the polls. He further described the running mate as a deeply committed party loyalist capable of driving grassroots mobilization.
“The governorship candidate of our great party, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has selected Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election in Kano State,” Shuaibu said.
He further added that the choice reflects the party’s commitment to unity, inclusiveness and effective representation.
Gwarzo, a formidable political figure and former Deputy Governor of Kano State, secured the NDC ticket following intense internal consultations. With the formal entry of Mustapha Kwankwaso into the ticket, the influential Kwankwasiyya movement is expected to fully throw its weight and structures behind the NDC, setting the stage for an epic battle for the soul of Kano State in 2027.
