The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has said social media influencer Martins Otse, popularly known as Verydarkman (VDM), and comedian Freedom Atsepoyi, widely called Mr Jollof, will face sanctions after their physical confrontation aboard an Asaba–Lagos flight on Monday.
In a statement posted on X, the NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection described the incident as “unacceptable behaviour,” warning that it posed a danger to passengers, crew, and the aircraft.
“There is no tolerance for unruly behaviour aboard an aircraft. Both individuals will face the full strength of the law,” the spokesperson wrote.
He also criticised the pair for setting a poor example, noting, “It is even more shameful when one considers both of them partners in educating their millions of followers to avoid unruly behaviour.”
According to the NCAA, the airline operating the flight is expected to file an official report, after which the regulator will begin legal and administrative processes. “The actions of both men put the safety of all other passengers and the crew at risk. It also put the safety of the aircraft at risk,” the spokesperson added.
Reaffirming the agency’s ongoing efforts to sensitise travellers, he stressed that no justification could excuse such conduct onboard. “The NCAA has exerted a lot of energy and resources in educating passengers about the dangers of unruly behaviour and its consequences. In this case, no matter what led to the fracas, there is no excuse that makes it acceptable.”
The altercation reportedly erupted from a long-running online feud between the two entertainers, which escalated into a physical fight inside the cabin. Passengers and crew had to intervene as tensions flared.
Shortly after the incident, VDM posted a video on Facebook claiming he confronted Mr Jollof, adding: “I don chop Jollof father for inside the plane. He bite me, man wey de bite.”
The NCAA spokesperson said he is still awaiting formal reports from the airline and crew members but assured that a comprehensive statement will be released once all details are verified.
