The Nigerian entertainment industry has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of Nollywood actor and comedian Odira Nwobu, who reportedly passed away in South Africa from complications linked to high blood pressure. His death occurred just hours after a night out at a club, leaving fans and colleagues stunned.
Nwobu’s passing is especially heartbreaking as he had only recently survived a horrific accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway—an incident many believed he would never recover from. His survival at the time sparked widespread gratitude and relief. Today, many of those same fans are struggling to accept the news of his death.
Renowned for his witty skits, sharp comic timing and memorable performances in numerous Nollywood films, Nwobu earned a nomination for Best Comic Actor at the African Movie Academy Awards. His vibrant personality and on-screen charisma made him a beloved figure across the industry.
A video circulating online announcing his death has triggered an outpouring of grief. One viewer wrote, “He survived an accident earlier this year… may his soul rest in peace.”
Actor Emeka Okoye, a close friend of the late comedian, expressed his devastation in an emotional Instagram post.
“My Awka brother Odira Nwobu, this your death shock me o. Nothing dey this life. Not too long ago you survived an accident that took your friend’s life—we thanked God for that. Now you went on a business trip and you are returning lifeless. God please protect us. This is so sad. Rest in the bosom of the Lord, bro. God knows best. My condolences to your mum and family.”
Nollywood has lost yet another bright star, cut down in his prime but forever remembered for the joy and laughter he shared with millions.
