Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, have arrested three suspects over alleged vandalism of public properties and building structures located on government land.
The suspects were apprehended on Monday evening in a joint operation carried out by NSCDC officers and the Agunaechemba Security Outfit in Onitsha Local Government Area.
They were caught in the act while vandalising government property on the premises of Onitsha South Local Government Area.
Disclosing the development to journalists on Tuesday in Awka, the Head of Media and Tactical Operations for the Command, SC Edwin Okadigbo, said the arrest followed a review of operational successes achieved by the Corps during the week.
Okadigbo identified the suspects as Oseloka Anyaorah of Onitsha Umuasi, who claimed to be the Chairman of the Ogbo Family, alongside John Nwobodo and Ifeanyi Nwancho, both of whom claimed to be workers under Anyaorah at the site.
Exhibits recovered from the suspects by security operatives include one government signpost, zinc sheets, nails, and various other building materials.
“Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects conspired to damage and remove parts of government infrastructure belonging to Onitsha South LGA.
The vandalised items have been recovered and are in the custody of the Corps,” Okadigbo added.
Reacting to the incident, the NSCDC Anambra State Commandant, Olatunde Maku, condemned the crime in strong terms, describing the vandalism of public property as economic sabotage targeted against the government and citizens of Anambra State.
Maku reaffirmed the determination of the Corps to safeguard critical national assets and infrastructure across the state.
He has since ordered that the suspects be properly profiled and charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.
The Commandant further appealed to traditional rulers, town union executives, and residents of Anambra State to assist security agencies by providing timely information to curb further destruction of public assets.
