The Local Government Inspector of the National Youth Service Corps in Abeokuta South, Abass Olalekan, has been taken into police custody following the death of a female corps member.

The deceased, Victoria Ariyo, who was serving in the Abeokuta South Local Government Area, reportedly died on Tuesday from complications related to a pregnancy.

Sources said the corps member had terminated the pregnancy and later developed complications that led to her death. She was subsequently buried at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.

Her death comes less than a month after another female corps member, Adeleye Mary, died under unclear circumstances in the same local government.

Mary, who was posted to Ogun State Television as her Place of Primary Assignment, was reportedly found lifeless in her residence, with the cause of her death yet to be determined. A source noted that both deceased corps members were friends.

According to reports, the NYSC official is being investigated over alleged involvement in circumstances leading to Ariyo’s death.

Sources claimed that Olalekan was in a romantic relationship with the deceased, which allegedly resulted in the pregnancy and its termination.

“That is the fact in issue,” a police source said, confirming that the NYSC official is currently in custody at the state police headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.

The source added that the situation raises concerns about the propriety of such a relationship, given the official’s supervisory role.

However, police clarified that there is no connection between Ariyo’s death and the earlier case involving Adeleye Mary.

“There’s no connection between this case and the other one,” the source said.

Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said Ariyo’s death had been recorded and that investigations were ongoing.

He did not respond to inquiries regarding the arrest of the NYSC official or the allegations surrounding his involvement.
