The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has refuted widespread reports alleging that Nigerian Navy officer, Lt. Ahmed Yerima, survived an assassination attempt in Abuja, insisting the claims are baseless and unsupported by any official record.
The rumours spread rapidly across social media over the weekend, with several accounts claiming that Yerima was trailed by unidentified men dressed in black and moving in two unmarked Hilux vans without number plates. The alleged chase was said to have begun at about 6:30 p.m. near the NIPCO filling station along the Kubwa Expressway and continued toward Gado Nasco Way, where Yerima reportedly escaped through a “strategic manoeuvre.”
Public speculation was further fueled by the fact that the reports emerged shortly after Yerima’s well-publicised confrontation with FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over a disputed land allocation in Abuja.
However, in a statement released on Sunday night, FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, dismissed the assassination claims outright, stressing that no such incident was recorded anywhere in the territory.
“The attention of the FCT Police Command has been drawn to publications circulating on social media alleging an attempted assassination on Lt. Ahmed Yerima. The command wishes to categorically state that no such incident has been reported or recorded anywhere within the Federal Capital Territory.
“The public is advised to disregard this false information and desist from spreading unverified claims capable of causing unnecessary panic,” the statement read.
Adeh urged residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police division, assuring that the command remains committed to public safety and timely response to credible threats.
