The Anambra State Police Command has issued a critical flood alert to residents across the state, urging parents, guardians, and caregivers to exercise heightened vigilance and adopt immediate safety precautions to safeguard schoolchildren following persistent torrential rainfall and severe flooding in various areas.
In a official press statement released on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed that the alert became necessary following recent heavy downpours that tragically resulted in the death of a primary school pupil.
The incident involved Success Ezenwafor, a pupil of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School, who was tragically swept away by heavy floodwaters at Isiagu in Awka South Local Government Area of the state.
Success was reportedly en route to school last Tuesday when the school bus conveying him alongside other passengers became trapped and was ultimately overturned by raging floodwaters.
Nine other occupants of the vehicle comprising seven schoolchildren and two adults were successfully rescued alive by operatives of the Anambra State Police Command working in close collaboration with concerned local residents.
The rescued victims were swiftly rushed to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, for urgent medical attention.
Success, however, was washed away by the strong currents and remained missing until his lifeless body was recovered the following morning.
