The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, has issued a stern warning to vandals and trespassers as the nation’s railways undergo electrification upgrades.
Speaking on The Exchange Podcast with Femi Soneye, Opeifa said the move to electric rail lines is a major milestone in modernizing Nigeria’s rail infrastructure, aimed at increasing efficiency, reducing travel time, and lowering operational costs.
“Electric rail is safer, faster, and more environmentally friendly, but it comes with inherent risks for those who tamper with the lines,” he said. “Vandals risk severe injury or death from electrocution.”
Opeifa explained that NRC is investing heavily in security, surveillance, and public awareness campaigns to safeguard both the infrastructure and communities around the tracks.
“Modern rail lines are national assets. Protecting them is not optional,” he stressed, urging citizens to report vandalism and avoid unauthorized access.
The NRC boss also highlighted that the electrification program is part of broader reforms designed to enhance freight capacity, improve passenger services, and attract private sector participation in the rail sector.
