The death of retired Justice Ifeoma Okogwu has thrown Asaba into shock after she was discovered murdered under disturbing and unclear circumstances at her residence on Sunday night.
The late judge, who lived in a quiet neighborhood behind The Pointer Newspapers in the Delta State capital, was found lifeless on Monday morning. Her brother, Ogbueshi Godfrey Okogwu, confirmed the tragedy, explaining that the family received the news only the next day, suggesting the attack occurred overnight.
One of the most troubling elements of the case is the unexplained disappearance of the night security guard assigned to the property. According to the family, the morning guard arrived to meet the gate wide open and provided no convincing explanation for what transpired before his arrival.
“My eldest sister was murdered in her house on Sunday night. We don’t know what actually happened,” Okogwu said. Speaking further on the guards’ accounts, he added, “The morning guard claimed he just sat down when he got there. Sat doing what? It makes no sense. None of this adds up.”
The family has since turned over all available details, including the security company’s information, to the police. The morning guard is currently in custody, and the company’s owner has been invited for questioning.
Describing the grim scene, Okogwu revealed that the judge had been brutally restrained—her hands, legs, and face bound—while her home appeared to have been thoroughly searched and scattered.
He emphasized that the full picture will only emerge after law enforcement concludes its investigation. “Only God knows what happened. We are waiting for the police to uncover the truth,” he said
