Vice President Kashim Shettima will proceed on a two-week official leave beginning Thursday, August 6, 2026, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The leave marks Shettima’s first official break since he assumed office alongside President Tinubu on May 29, 2023.
The development was announced in a statement issued by the Vice President’s spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, who said the period away from official duties would be devoted to study, reflection and intellectual renewal.
According to the statement, the leave is intended to enable the Vice President to assess the administration’s ongoing programmes, broaden his understanding of emerging national and global policy issues, and strengthen his capacity for the next phase of government activities under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Nkwocha said the period would also provide an opportunity for Shettima to reflect on key government initiatives while preparing intellectually for the demands of governance.
Since assuming office, the Vice President has played a central role in coordinating several strategic government programmes, particularly in the areas of economic development, food security, humanitarian affairs, digital transformation, job creation and regional cooperation.
He has also presided over meetings of the National Economic Council (NEC), which comprises the 36 state governors, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other senior government officials responsible for shaping economic policies and addressing national development issues.
Highlighting his international engagements, the statement said, “Beyond his responsibilities within the country, Vice President Shettima has represented President Tinubu at major international and regional engagements, advancing Nigeria’s position on economic integration, peace and security, climate action, investment and sustainable development.”
The spokesman further stated that the Vice President remains committed to supporting the administration’s objectives.
“Senator Shettima remains deeply committed to the ideals of loyalty, duty and service that have defined his role in the administration, as well as to supporting President Tinubu’s efforts to build a more secure, productive and prosperous Nigeria,” the statement said.
According to the statement, Shettima is expected to resume official duties at the expiration of the two-week leave.
“The Vice President will return to office at the end of the two-week leave period and resume his official responsibilities with renewed energy and dedication to the service of the nation,” it added.
