Super Eagles striker Akor Adams has insisted that Nigeria’s ambition to become the undisputed top footballing nation in Africa must start with a solid statement in the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Speaking in an interview with Pooja Media on Thursday ahead of the national team’s qualifying campaign, the forward emphasized the critical nature of the upcoming fixtures in shaping the team’s long-term trajectory.
According to Adams, the two qualification matches are vital because they will establish the benchmark for the squad’s grand ambitions on the continent.
“It’s very important because I think it sets the mark for what we want to do. If we want to be the best team in Africa, it starts from the qualification, like the coach has clearly said. And that is what we aim to achieve as well,” Adams declared.
Head coach Éric Chelle recently unveiled his squad list for the AFCON qualifiers as well as an international friendly against Russia, handing inaugural call-ups to several fresh faces.
Reacting to the new inclusions, Adams welcomed the increased competition within the squad, expressing confidence that it would elevate the overall quality of the team.
“It’s always good to see that we have players who are also doing well, and who can get the chance to be in the team. Whatever makes us better, that’s the goal,” he noted.
He added, “The coach makes it very clear that if any player that comes here clearly deserves it, and we’re happy to welcome them as well.”
The prolific forward, who makes a return to the national team fold for the international window, expressed delight at reuniting with his teammates.
“It feels good, feels good. It’s also a privilege to be back with the group, and yeah, we’re happy to be back,” Adams said.
Ahead of the crucial fixtures, the striker rallied Nigerian football supporters to turn out in large numbers and back the team wholeheartedly.
“Be optimistic, come out in good support and in good faith in the team, because we know you guys support us. And we’ll try to give our best on the pitch,” he urged.
The Super Eagles will be aiming to hit the ground running and secure smooth qualification for the 2027 AFCON as they launch their campaign under coach Éric Chelle.
