Celebrity fashion designer and entrepreneur, Toyin Lawani, has accused a Lagos-based private hospital, Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, of medical mismanagement following a surgical procedure she underwent at the facility.
Lawani, founder of Tiannah Empire, made the allegations public on Sunday through a series of emotional posts on her Instagram page, detailing what she described as life-altering complications after visiting the hospital for spine surgery.
According to her, the procedure left her unable to walk or speak properly, while she also suffered lung infections and other serious complications, despite spending close to N100 million on medical care.
“Euracare Hospital your cup is finally full… You go spend close to 100m for hospital & them go still mismanage your health,” she wrote, adding that she intends to sue the hospital once she fully recovers.
Lawani alleged that after the initial surgery, she began bleeding from her lungs and had to be taken back into the operating theatre the following day. She claimed her condition worsened, leading to breathing difficulties and loss of consciousness.
“Before I know I stopped breathing, they had to puncture my lungs and destroyed my vocal cords,” she said.
She further stated that after being discharged, she lost the use of her legs and had to return to the hospital. According to her, an ear, nose and throat specialist in the United Kingdom later advised the hospital to conduct another surgery to remove a tracheotomy tube to enable her breathe independently.
Lawani said she was eventually flown to the UK with her family, where doctors discovered infections in her lungs that required yet another surgery.
“When I got here, the doctors told me I had to do another surgery again & said I had infection in my lungs & they showed me the big lumps,” she wrote.
The designer disclosed that she spent months in hospital and rehabilitation, developed bedsores, and had to relearn basic functions including walking, speaking and bathing. She added that she is still undergoing speech therapy and continues to receive follow-up treatment.
“I lost the use of my hands and legs… I am still undergoing speech therapy till today. When I tell people I am dealing with trauma, they do not understand me at all,” she said.
Lawani explained that she decided to speak out after reading about a similar medical case involving Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, which she said triggered painful memories of her own experience.
“This traumatic experience completely changed my entire life,” she wrote, calling for stricter regulation of Nigeria’s healthcare system. She alleged that some private hospitals operate primarily as businesses and lack adequate oversight.
She also claimed to have evidence and receipts to support her allegations, insisting that she emerged from surgery without lung damage and that warning signs were ignored until her condition deteriorated.
“I promised them that when I am well and sound, they will hear from me,” Lawani added.
As of the time of filing this report, Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital has not issued a public response to the allegations.
