Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has clarified that he never promised President Bola Tinubu that he would defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying his commitment was to support the President’s re-election bid.
Wike made the clarification during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Tuesday night, amid renewed speculation over his political affiliation and relationship with the ruling party.
According to the minister, his discussions with Tinubu were limited to supporting the President’s bid for another term in office and did not include any commitment to formally join the APC.
“I told them I would support the President right from the start. I never told Mr. President I will join APC. Go and ask him. If I want to join APC, it’s not people like Hope who will tell me to join APC.
“In fact, he is lucky I’m not in APC because I wouldn’t put up with that kind of nonsense he’s doing in APC,” Wike said.
The former Rivers State governor has remained a prominent member of the political coalition supporting Tinubu’s administration despite retaining his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
