A viral social media video has sparked intense debate after a Nigerian woman claimed she was suspended from her church for posting a photo of herself in a bikini on her WhatsApp status.
In the trending clip, the woman expresses her frustration, stating she has been a dedicated worshiper at the unnamed church for three years. She alleged that her pastor issued the suspension specifically because of the swimwear photo, leading her to “cry out” against what she perceives as an unfair double standard in the institution’s disciplinary actions.
The woman further criticized the church’s priorities, claiming a lack of support during her previous times of need.
“When water entered my house, they didn’t do anything about it,” she stated in the video. “They’ve never given me one cup of rice in that church before, and they’re suspending me for wearing a bikini”.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions in Nigeria between modern digital lifestyles and traditional religious expectations. While some social media users have defended the church’s right to uphold its moral codes, others have rallied behind the woman, echoing her concerns regarding the lack of communal support from religious bodies during personal hardships.
As of Monday, May 4, 2026, the specific church involved has not released an official statement regarding the suspension or the allegations made in the viral video.
