The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has resigned from office following impeachment proceedings initiated against him by the Kano State House of Assembly.
The resignation was announced on Friday in a statement issued by Habibu Sale Mohammed on behalf of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
Gwarzo’s exit comes days after the state assembly began impeachment proceedings over allegations that are yet to be fully resolved in court.
In a related development, a Federal High Court sitting in Kano had earlier declined an application by the deputy governor seeking to halt the impeachment process, allowing the legislative action to proceed.
Announcing the resignation, the Kwankwasiyya Movement described the decision as difficult but necessary in the interest of governance and stability in the state.
“The Kwankwasiyya Movement wishes to formally inform the general public… that the Deputy Governor of Kano State has tendered his resignation from office,” the statement read.
It added that recent political developments had limited his ability to effectively perform his duties.
“Recent circumstances have, to a considerable extent, constrained the full realization of the benefits and responsibilities attached to the office of the Deputy Governor… it has become imperative to allow the office to function optimally in the best interest of the public it is meant to serve.”
The movement emphasised that the resignation does not amount to an admission of guilt, noting that Gwarzo maintains his innocence.
“For the avoidance of doubt, this resignation does not in any way constitute an admission of the allegations raised against him… The Deputy Governor maintains his innocence and firmly believes that his records in office and public service remain a testament to his integrity and commitment to the people,” the statement added.
It further described the move as an act of statesmanship aimed at preventing political tensions from escalating into a crisis that could disrupt governance in Kano State.
According to the statement, Gwarzo will now focus on strengthening the Kwankwasiyya Movement and engaging in political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group also urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring that further updates would be communicated in due course.
