Malian authorities have arrested a self-proclaimed marabout accused of defrauding football supporters by claiming he could ensure the country’s success at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) through spiritual means.
The suspect, identified simply as Mr Sinayogo, was taken into custody in Bamako on Saturday after Mali’s national team crashed out of the tournament following a 1–0 quarter-final defeat to Senegal on Friday.
According to sources familiar with the case, Sinayogo allegedly collected more than 22 million CFA francs, estimated at about €33,500, from supporters who believed his spiritual intervention would guarantee Mali’s victory.
Following the loss, angry fans reportedly besieged his residence, accusing him of deception and demanding accountability. Security operatives intervened to prevent violence and escorted him away for his own safety.
The suspect is currently being held by the cybercrime division on allegations of fraud. Officials said that charlatanism and false spiritual claims for financial gain are criminal offences under Malian law.
Authorities noted that taking action against Sinayogo before the tournament ended was considered risky due to heightened emotions surrounding AFCON. Investigators also revealed that the suspect was previously known as a political activist before reinventing himself as a marabout, a move that allegedly brought him significant financial benefits.
