The Norwegian Football Federation (NFF), widely recognized as one of the fiercest critics of FIFA President Gianni Infantino over the years, has officially called for his immediate resignation.
Speaking on Friday, the head of the Norwegian Football Federation, Lise Klaveness, disclosed the position of the body following a crucial meeting of its governing council where the fate and tenure of the embattled FIFA chief were thoroughly reviewed.
Addressing reporters after the meeting, Klaveness stated, “He does not have the institutional trust required to lead FIFA in a stable manner in the current climate. There is no turning back for Gianni Infantino.”
Emphasizing the federation’s resolve to push for leadership change at the global football governing body, she further added, “We are going to ask the FIFA president to resign now.”
The demand for Infantino’s exit comes at a critical juncture, as he prepares to stand for re-election for a fourth and final term next March.
The Italian-Swiss lawyer, who has held the office of FIFA President since 2016, is currently the sole declared candidate for the upcoming election. To retain his seat, Infantino must secure a simple majority of the 211 votes from FIFA member associations, while prospective opposition candidates have until November 18 to formally declare their interest.
Infantino has recently come under intense global pressure following the collapse of his controversial proposal revealed just last week which aimed to open FIFA competitions, including the flagship World Cup, to private investors.
