The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 30 new academic programmes for the Federal University Dutse (FUD), Jigawa State, including Artificial Intelligence, Law, Data Science, Medical Laboratory Science, and Community Health.
The development was announced in a statement signed and made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, by the Acting Director of Public Affairs, Federal University Dutse, Abdullahi Yahaya.
According to Yahaya, the approval was conveyed in an official letter dated September 11, 2026, with reference number NUC/AP/F33/VOL.II/15, signed by the NUC Director of Academic Planning, Abubakar M. Girei, and addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ahmad Gumel.
He revealed that the commission approved the Faculty of Law to commence full academic activities and granted full-time mode approval for all 30 new programmes, starting from the 2026/2027 academic session.
Giving a breakdown of the new undergraduate offerings, Yahaya listed courses such as “B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence, B.Sc. Data Science, B.Sc. Information Systems and L.L.B. Common and Islamic Law”.
He added that other approved undergraduate courses include “B. Sc. Ed. Physics, Biology, Mathematics, B.Ed. Educational Management, Early Childhood Education, Adult Education, B.A. Ed. Arabic and English”.
Highlighting the health-related disciplines included in the expansion, the university spokesman said, “B. Sc.
Community Health, Medical Laboratory Science, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Radiography and Optometry”.
Yahaya further stated that other science-based programmes approved by the NUC are “B.Sc. Parasitology and Entomology, Environmental Standards, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Applied Geology and Remote Sensing”.
He added that the university also secured approval for “Science Laboratory Technology with options in Biology and Biochemistry Technology”.
On the postgraduate level, the NUC sanctioned several advanced courses, including “PGD, M.Sc. and PhD in Forestry and Wildlife, Accounting, Treasury and Finance, Banking and Finance and Information Technology”.
Yahaya added that “Masters in Banking and Finance and Masters in Accounting and Finance” were also approved by the commission.
Reacting to the regulatory approval, the Vice-Chancellor of FUD, Prof. Ahmad Gumel, stated that the milestone represents a major step forward in his administration’s goal to expand academic offerings at the institution.
“The new programmes are specifically designed to address the evolving educational needs of society as the courses focus on critical areas such as technology, science education and health-related disciplines,” Gumel stated.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that the academic expansion aims to meet global trends and prepare students directly for modern labor requirements.
“This strategic academic growth aims to equip students with relevant skills and knowledge that align with current industry demands and societal challenges, ensuring that FUD graduates are well-prepared for the workforce,” he said.
