President Bola Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun from office as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
Presidential aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the development on Tuesday, stating that Tinubu asked Egbetokun to step aside during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.
“Yes. Egbetokun is gone,” one of the aides said. Another disclosed that a formal statement announcing the decision was being prepared and would be released shortly.
Efforts to obtain confirmation from the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages sent to him had not been returned as of press time.
Egbetokun has been replaced by Olatunji Disu, a newly appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG). Disu was recently promoted to the rank of AIG and posted to head the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos before his elevation to the top position.
Born on September 4, 1964, Egbetokun was due to retire from the Nigeria Police Force in September 2024 upon attaining the mandatory retirement age. However, his tenure had been extended by President Tinubu prior to his removal.
