The United States and Iran have formally agreed to end their four-month armed conflict through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) brokered with the support of Pakistan, marking a major diplomatic breakthrough in efforts to restore stability in the region.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, announced the development, revealing that the agreement, known as the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,” was signed electronically by leaders of both countries following weeks of diplomatic engagement.
Under the initial framework of the agreement, Iran is expected to immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route, while the United States will lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports as part of early de-escalation measures.
The agreement was reportedly finalized after digital signatures were exchanged between the parties following engagements involving U.S. President Donald Trump and senior Iranian officials.
A key component of the deal includes the establishment of a $300 billion support fund for Iran, alongside the release of frozen Iranian assets and a phased easing of sanctions.
However, several contentious issues remain unresolved. Iran’s nuclear programme, enriched uranium stockpiles, and broader regional security concerns have been deferred to a structured 60-day technical negotiation process.
The next phase of discussions will focus on verification mechanisms, nuclear oversight arrangements, and long-term security guarantees, with Pakistan and Qatar expected to continue their mediation roles.
Prime Minister Sharif described the agreement as a significant diplomatic achievement and commended regional and international partners who contributed to the peace efforts.
The conflict began in late February following coordinated military strikes and continued intermittently despite a ceasefire attempt in April. The newly signed agreement is expected to bring a formal end to active hostilities while paving the way for broader negotiations on security and nuclear-related issues.
